It isn’t often that a chamber violinist gets to perform a piece composed by his father, but when the Harlem Quartet stages its concert at Loyola University tomorrow night, Ilmar Gavilan will have that opportunity.

Among the four pieces the quartet will be performing is an Afro-Cuban dance number titled “Cuarteto en Guaguanco” that Gavilan’s father, Guido Lopez-Gavilan, the retired conductor of the Havana Symphony Orchestra, originally composed for a full orchestra.

“My father was not nice to us,” Gavilan joked. “He wrote a hard piece for us to perform. When you boil down something written for an orchestra to just four people, it becomes even more intricate.” read more at theadvocate.com
